MET Gala 2013
Ah, the big night is finally here and I am glad we can still give some critics to celebs and what they wear last night. I have to admit that the theme of the MET this year is quite hard, PUNK: Chaos to Couture. Does it mean that we have to dress like punk on the red carpet? Well, pretty much yes and this was a big shock to all-girly and sweet brands like Dior. I mean, Dior is great at glamour and elegant theme, but Punk? Who cares about Punk except Saint Laurent and Givenchy (which is the note speaker of the night, congrats Mr. Tisci!). Just like what I had predicted earlier, the stars didn’t look really Punk at all. Some of them did look great, they were really into theme and maximize the concept of the Gala, but they looked like…uh, young rockers that should be rocking on the stage somewhere else, not on the spotlight of MET’s red carpet. It was okay though.
Jennifer Lawrence made quite an impact with her Dior Haute Couture dress, which looks like her ultimate trump card these past few days. Well, Jennifer maybe you want to try another brand next time? Chanel perhaps, or maybe something young and chic from Topshop? Anyway, Sarah Jessica Parker looked quite punk mixed with feminism like usual in Giles Deacon, her Philip Treacy headwear dangling on top of her head just like how Anna Dello Russo rocks it. Beyonce burned in Givenchy fire gown, Dakota Fanning looked almost Punk in Rodarte and I praise Sophia Coppola for changing the whole theme from Punk to Pajamas, along with her date Marc Jacobs in Comme des Garcons -again. But who am I to judge? Paloma Faith also surprised me with her sexy-back glittering gown. Wow, she should be hanging out around here sometimes, she got the style (even though it’s not really Punk).
Anne Hathaway finally gave me a little thrill by slipping into Valentino Couture and looked (and felt) more Punk than she is. Good job Hathaway! A bit wardrobe disaster for women who wore red for the night like Zhang Ziyi and Maggie Gyllenhaal because they looked really into-the-carpet, with all the lights and blitz. Euh, not a good sign. More bad signs came form the Olsen twins who dressed pretty much…messy. What happened guys? And I can’t decide wether Nicole Richie’s new white hair will save her or not. But, please, bow down to Rooney Mara, who is dressed by Ricardo Tisci of Givenchy himself. She looked really stunning (and pale) in Givenchy Haute Couture, decorated with white and lace. My God, she looked more like an angel than Punk and definitely not a girl with some hideous tattoo.
The night is completed with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian, strutting down the carpet in Givenchy custom dress (for Kim). Hmm, I never thought that Kim’s belly would be that big. She looked a bit uncomfortable, maybe because of the baby? Anyway, I have to say that designers had done a great job for tonight and they deserve some applause (no, they deserve a day off), after all it is a hard thing to be Punk in this era. We are more like pop and colors, I think….
