What Made Me Realized I loved Fashion

If I’m being completely honest, which I am, when I was first approached with this question there was no key event that stood out in my mind. It was then that I realized that without really noticing, I’ve gone from a young child who hated everything about fancy new clothes (especially dresses, EW!) to a teenage girl who is never out of a shop and dreams of the day when she can be responsible for the front cover of vogue.

I think there will always be that one moment in every little girl’s life when she is dawdling behind her mum in a shop and she sees something and thinks “oooh I’d like to wear that!” For me that point come a little later than it does for some little girls however from that point on any opportunity to hit the shops or glance through a fashion magazine would not be turned down. When I got a little older I developed a habit of buying loads of the same type of clothes just because they were in fashion. Don’t kid yourself. You’ve been there too!

One summer I saw so many girls were sleeveless tops that I would probably buy a new one (or maybe two) every week and by the time I went away on holiday I literally only had about 12 sleeveless tops and nothing else! I’m sure you’re now remembering a time when all you wore were ballet pumps or when you had a crazy obsession with shoe strings vests, yeah? Well, that’s fashion. It’s about living in the moment and enjoying the trend. BUT, fashion isn’t all about following the trend, or else we’d all look the same, except having different eye colors. No I’d say that was just 20%. What I’m trying to say is that realizing you have a love of fashion can often come from the desire to express your self and that is why I love fashion.

The Vale Apartment

The_Vale-apartments-5

I get a lot of complaints recently from my friends and families telling me that they love the Architecture category on my blog, but can I post something nearer to Jakarta? The answer is I don’t really care about the location or how far it is from my hometown when I write those posts. They’re beautiful and really enchanting and I will post it. Period. But point taken, I re-read my Architecture posts and realized that they’re telling the truth. Maybe I have to write something from South-East Asia and that’s why I found this luxurious, simple and elegant (really good adjectives to use) apartment in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Designed by Blu Water Studio, ‘The Vale Apartment’ looks really similar to the ones in Indonesia. It is simple and more modern, but not as clean or elegant as the ones in Westren countries, it still has some traditional material like touches of woods, dim lights and a lot of natural views of the mountain. The furnitures are kept to the minimal to increase the simplicity feelings and functional environment, but I don’t really like the concept. I really want to live in a cool, a bit more artsy apartment and I really think that this kind of apartment feels really cold and… lonely. Okay, totally have to stop watching drama movies because they’re clouding my judgement. Cool apartment! Yeay!

STYLE Loves: Newbark Shoes

newbark garancedore

I have a certain admiration to shoes, men and women. They’re like really classic and can’t go wrong with shapes or colors. They’re just perfect in every shape (well, maybe not every shape, but almost in every shape). And they’re just vital. You can wear a perfect haute couture dress and makeups with fancy clutch (or expensive jewelries, people are starting to forget to bring clutches to the red carpet lately), but if you don’t wear the right heels… well, simply put, you won’t be in the cover of Vogue’s Best Dressed or any other magazine even though you are famous and play in some really touching movies.

Okay, my latest favorite is the one from Newbark. It has beautiful snake/abstract pattern which makes you look artsy and a bit edgy, but it also comes in black which goes with every color you are wearing at the moment. Plus, they are flats and sneaker-like you don’t have to be worried making your feet bleed while doing your works. I am not sure if they have something like this for men, but if they do, I will definitely order one right away. New shoes, new paths to walk on!

Central Saint Martins Fall 2011

Profesor Louise Wilson really got me this time. She had selected her 21 best graduates and made them worked like crazy in order to finally get a chance in London Fashion Week 2 seasons ago. I am really not familiar with the atmosphere of Central Saint Martins show or how it should be done. The only thing I notice is how long the show was. It was like a marathon of designers’ works and a lot of clothes, tons of models and make ups with one catwalk. It must be hard fighting for the spotlight.

21 designers means 21 reviews for each collection, but I really am not going to do that. Geez, my fingers will bleed to numb if I have to write that long. And your eyes would be watery and tired and you would end up cursing me and my blog and left me in here alone. Okay, too dramatic. The collections are too short to write about anyway. Well, these students sure know how to make clothes, but I am not sure if they know how to make a wearable collection. Everything seems to be really baggy and oversized and there are robes! A lot of robes-looked-alike dresses that makes me feel really uncomfortable.

William Henry made quite a simple, black on black collection, showing clean cuts and quite conservative style. But he managed to give a shock with blazing orange jackets in the end. Daniel Lee tried to experiment with twisting style and texture, combining yellow tops with beige/brown bottoms. Looks really familiar with Indonesian/Malaysian traditional clothes called Sarong, which is really not the best choice, if you want to take a walk in the city.

Helen Bullock came up a bit loose and colorful which is really fun, but maybe too ‘big’ and not really elegant for my style. Myrza De Muynck gave a lot of sportswear-like outfits which are sporty and a bit relaxed, I like it. But maybe next time she can make more outfits than jacket and pants. She can do more than this, I can feel it. Bethan Silverwood followed her friends and made robes-looked-alike dresses with splash of orange-stripes-patterns. I like the patterns, I don’t really like the ‘robes’. She can pull the pattern much better, if she choose to make oversized (but quite tight in the breast and stomach areas, like dress) sweater and just printed the pattern all over the sweater. Marta Marques and Paulo Almeida made quite funky collection with denim, I feel a bit vintage looking at their collection…and ripped apart. In one hand I like the denim ‘popped-up’, but I don’t really like the opening number.

Okay, the rest of them are amazing too. But one thing I noticed right after the show started is how they try to impress us by playing with materials and shapes and colors. They’re really fresh and ready to take on the world, but I feel like they’re also too avant-garde. Too… (I am sorry, I also hate this word as much as you do) naive. The clothes are amazing on the runway, but we have to sell them after fashion weeks and selling is different with making clothes. It can be much tougher with less credit. Still, it’s always great to see young, fresh, half-mature (in a good way) ideas and shows. I wonder, where are they now? Maybe working for great half-gods designers or starting their own online shops (everything seems to be online nowadays)?

Geek of the Day: Sarah Rosado

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Checking emails can be either a depressing or frustrating thing to do. Depressing when you are looking for a notification email and you can’t find them, it’s somewhere underneath millions of similar emails. This depression quickly turn into frustration when you find out that it’s only a spam. Geez, bad mood is on the top of the list. I experience these things a lot, I became allergic to checking emails or login to my emails.

But last night I had to do it and finally a good thing pooped out from my inbox. An email from photographer and illustrator from New York named Sarah Rosado. She sent me a bunch of her photos and I quickly dug into it. After that, I have to say that I am impressed. These photos are bold, funny and send some messages that are easy to understand.

They do need some improvements in editing though, some photos look a bit too rough for my taste, but they are quite admirable. I really like how Sarah managed to combine colors and subjects, making them quite surreal and fantasy-like. But this is not the master level yet, it’s more like professional who needs more training and experience in both editing, making theme and improve the story telling ability of the photo. Anyway, Sarah sure is one of the next big things that we have to watch. Closely.

Simple Is More Than Enough

simple simple jakandjil.com paris

As a fashion blogger I have a real fancy for something simple. I like Susie Bubble, but I always think that she sometimes look overdressed and very…uncomfortable with her own clothes. Sometimes we need to chill out and wear something soo simple that it will make our foreheads wrinkle and think; Why don’t I try the same style? To dress simple, you have to think simple too. Maybe in regular days you will bring a lot of work stuffs or school books with you. Same with me.

I tend to minimize the book by arranging it into one binder filled with notes, post its and lots of dividers, when I need to go to school or class I just have to bring the binder along with me. It’s like one book (or folder) for whole classes. Easy. For you, workers, maybe you can try to buy iPad and use it like a pro. Download more applications to keep and make and edit your documents and connect your iPad (or whatever Pad you have) to your office computer, so you don’t have to bring big laptops or organizer or things like that. And there is a Mini iPad. Ah, God has given you a sign to make your life much… lighter. Imagine having to pack only one Mini iPad with charger and maybe small organizer and your slim smartphone to your bag. Heaven.

Next phase is the clothes. Simple clothes mean two or maybe three pieces of major items. Tops, bottoms, outerwear (scarf or maybe coat). Bag is another problem. Tops can be a tricky item, too much patterns and you go from simple to crazy fashionista. Better start with plain black tops from Alexander Wang or maybe cool shirts from Altuzarra, just remember; choose the plain ones or the ones with less prints/patterns/too bold colors. For the bottom, I really recommend a straight, clean and simple pants. You can also wear skirt, maybe a leather one will be nice. You will look sexy and dangerous and a bit naughty. Aww!

My personal favorite from this style is the bag. Simple style gives a lot of room to experiment with bags and this style goes with any type of bags you want. But my choice falls between The Row Fall 2012 bags and the bag in the picture (I think it’s Celine or Chloe, but I am really not sure). Both are really simple, wearable with enough space for your stuffs and it has really luxurious design. Ah, I am confused! Which one will you choose?

Oh, one more thing! Simple is great, but it can be boring too. Add something brave like bright patterns or maybe leopard print in small items like scarves or your bags (!). You can also try to wear your spiky necklaces to make the whole outfit become younger.

Tumblr? Tumblr?

2013-04-28 03:44:19 +00001

Well, looks like Tumblr family just got a new member. Me. Yeah, I know, Tumblr sounded like not-really-my-style a couple days ago. It just too simple and too fast. You just have to click a few buttons and wait for a few seconds, then all your photos and musics and quotes and your words are out there. No filter except your own minds, internet and mouth. Ugh. WordPress on the other hand gives time for me to think about what I want to write and how to write it. Tumblr is just too…instant.

But my friends are telling me that if I want to make a cool portfolio for my photos, I better do it in other platform because WordPress is too formal for them or any teen in Indonesia (that’s judgmental) (but it’s probably true). Well, you will never satisfied the society. Anyway, I surrendered to the pressure and finally made my very first Tumblr account. In case you are wondering why the hell I choose DEAD PHOTO SOCIETY as the title of my Tumblr. Well, maybe because I really impressed by Dead Poets Society and I want to make something like that for photos, not poetry.

Okay, if you are lucky, maybe I will post some poets and quotes by me. Heh, what a cocky man I must be, thinking that you will like my words. Back to the topic, I am not used to Tumblr and it will be a bit awkward for next few months, but I am working in it and I hope you are kind enough to give me a visit and be the very first follower of Dead Photo Society. Oh, maybe you will find some photos from this blog, don’t worry they’re all mine and I have edited them really good (maybe too much).

Visit me in here and don’t forget to follow me!

(no pressure) (but you will be very mean, if you don’t do it. We are friends, right?!)

Tumblr me to your page, please!

HATWOMAN Spring 2013 Ad Campaign

HATWOMAN-Spring-Summer-2013-Baldovino-Barani-02

Amazing things come from your brain inside your head and let me tell you something; head is really important to protect. That’s why men (or women?) made hats! To keep the amazing thoughts in your head safe and sound and, well, stylish. Well, after looking for fashion materials on the internet to blog about (lying! I just ended up watching the Avengers) (cool movie) (I seriously just got an Iron Man fever), I just stumbled into these wonderful shoots from HATWOMAN Spring 2013 campaign.

Photographed by Baldovino Barani and featured model Inessa Novichkova, the shoots are a mixture between dramatic old (think Gone with the Wind and other cool black and white films) and quite futuristic fashion (think Hunger Games). I thought there are only some beautiful headwear available on the market like Louis Vuitton and Hermes and they’re really really totally not affordable for me yet, turns out we have a whole lot of hats (eh… headwear, I mean). Keep your head safe and stylish everyone!

Pool Me In

pool party las vegas thesartorialist

Before we head back to my enormous archives of winter outfits that I haven’t posted yet, I think it’s time for us to enjoy a bit spring-y life. And what is more spring/summer style than a pool party? I know that’s it’s too early to held a pool party, but who cares? As long as you get the right bikini, right guests, a couple of hunks and sexy ladies as servants and a big, nice pool (both warm and cold. It’s spring not summer yet). You and your guests will be just fine.

Now, you can give those lame duties preparing the cocktails and whatever a pool party needs to your party planner and organizers. We get something more important to do! What are you going to wear to your own party? You have to be more gorgeous, but less cocky (no one likes a cocky house owner). Are you going to be the good (a bit elegant with cold class) house mistress or warm friendly girlfriend who just want to hangout with her friends and boyfriends? Every role needs it’s own costume.

If you want to be the mistress, I suggest you to look for more ‘expensive’ one piece that has neutral colors like something beige or black with elegant cutting (think Hollywood Stars in Vogue). You can also wear a summer dress because a mistress never show too much skins even though it’s in a pool party. Next, you can add (no, it’s a must!) some jewelries like simple yet elegant necklace or maybe your ‘diamond’ ring, earrings also tolerable even though I find them quite…out of place. The battle of class has just begun, arena: the pool, living room and bathroom (put some artsy paintings or even sculptures in there along with expensive ‘free’ beauty products. You are the Queen).

But sometimes playing a cold mistress from Upper East Side can be boring and unaffordable. How about something cheaper, but still fun? Just rent a giant rubber pool, serve some homemade punches and invite your closest friends to your apartment’s roof. Just like how Carrie in Sex and The City will do it. Ah, in this case, you can wear something braver and younger. Maybe sexy red bikini or something with a lot of tribal patterns and floral? If you don’t like bikini, you can wear cropped tops with denim shorts, but it has to be really really short and punk-like. You don’t have to wear jewelries or shiny stuffs because maybe you will find yourself drunk and skinny dipping in the rubber pool. Euh, but still fun!

Alice McCall Spring 2014

833495-1_l

Another great designer that I recently found in Australia Fashion Week is Alice McCall. She just did an amazing collection with flowing, easy and relaxed dresses which are very appropriate to greet summer. Alice succeed in playing with curves and shapes, creating a unique combination with spiral patterns and soft (mostly nude and soft blue) colors. I simply love the mini dresses, they really do what they have to do and I am sure a lot of Australian fashionistas will fight for those dresses. But just like any other designer, this collection is not perfect. I think Alice has two main weaknesses in her collection and her show.

First, when I first saw the slideshows of the collection from Vogue Australia, I felt really good in first pictures. Then the maxi dresses come out and suddenly the plot went from ‘glamorous spring with a lot of royal blue shades’ into ‘easy breezy almost too weak dresses and cut out tops’. Wow, wait a minute. What happened to the glams and rich blue colors? They are really strong and I think she should have done it backward, maybe she should keep those blue for the last to give that dramatic and ‘final’ effect we always love. This collection is not final for me, more like a recess. Nothing too… dramatic or thrilling, feels more like a light breeze.

Second is her maxi dresses (not the ones in the pictures). I don’t know why, but I always thought ‘too light’. Watching the dresses flowing and ruining the models’ bodies was just a pain. And I couldn’t bear the thought of having those pictures on my blog, so I didn’t do it and focused on the mini dresses which are far far greater than the maxi. My God, I just really hate the lack of sexiness and body in summer dresses. Some designers managed to pull it off with some tricks and maybe Alice should learn some too.

Anyway, this is one of the most superb collection I have ever seen so far from Australia. Need a bit readjustment to fit the all-American styles. But I am sure she will be great, her design reminds me somehow of Dion Lee. Structural, simple and has something… cool and Australian in it (a mixture between simple yet conscious and still stylish style), even though Alice sure looks weaker and ‘easier’ to take than Dion Lee. Still, watch out Lee, a new game has just begun and Alice is going to play it hard.
